Ukrainian evacuation plane hijacked into Iran from Kabul: Reports

A Ukrainian minister said on Tuesday that the plane that escaped from Afghanistan was hijacked to land on Iran. However, Ukraine and Iran rejected the request.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Yevgeny Yenin said that the plane was hijacked by "armed people", TASS reports. According to him, the plane was stolen from Ukraine and "flew to Iran with an unidentified group of passengers."
He, however, did not divulge more information about what happened to the flight.

Hours later, Iranian authorities denied that the hijacked plane had landed in Iran. Ukraine has also officially denied Yenin's claim about the hijacking of the plane.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko denied information about the hijacking of a national airliner in Kabul. He told Interfax that Yenin "broadly describes the unprecedented difficulties that diplomats face in evacuating Ukrainian citizens."

Many countries began missions to evacuate their people from Afghanistan after the Taliban came to power on August 15. The expedited evacuation was aided by American forces occupying Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKI).
